{"id":105,"date":"2009-01-16T08:52:36","date_gmt":"2009-01-16T08:52:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rahu.dk\/martynlowe\/?p=105"},"modified":"2011-03-30T08:12:08","modified_gmt":"2011-03-30T08:12:08","slug":"another-forgotten-piece-of-%e2%80%98our-glorious-history%e2%80%99","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.theproject.me.uk\/?p=105","title":{"rendered":"Another Forgotten Piece of &#8216;our glorious History&#8217;."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>People celebrate the abolition of slavery within Europe and<br \/>\nNorth America,<br \/>\nbut forget that &#8216;bonded labour&#8217; ( another form of slavery ),<br \/>\nis still in place within many parts of the world.<\/p>\n<p>Britain gave up the slave trade over 150 years ago,<br \/>\nbut it was still involved in supporting slavery for a long time<br \/>\nafter that.<\/p>\n<p>I was reminded of this fact while reading the obituary of<br \/>\nColonel David Smiley,<br \/>\nwhich was published in The Times on January 14th.<\/p>\n<p>During a long military career Smiley worked with the Sultan<br \/>\nof Omans Armed Forces during the late 1950s.<\/p>\n<p>It might also be noted that British SAS forces were active in<br \/>\nOman against various insurgencies during the 1960s.<\/p>\n<p>Now here is the interesting point:<br \/>\nSlavery was only officially abolished in Oman during the<br \/>\nearly 1970s.<\/p>\n<p>There was not a word about slavery in Oman which appeared<br \/>\nwithin the Times Smiley obituary.<\/p>\n<p>It would of been a very different kind of obituary if this fact<br \/>\nhad been noted.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>People celebrate the abolition of slavery within Europe and North America, but forget that &#8216;bonded labour&#8217; ( another form of slavery ), is still in place within many parts of the world.
