{"id":1055,"date":"2020-05-25T09:32:37","date_gmt":"2020-05-25T08:32:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theproject.me.uk\/?p=1055"},"modified":"2020-05-25T09:33:36","modified_gmt":"2020-05-25T08:33:36","slug":"in-times-gone-by-and-in-times-present","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.theproject.me.uk\/?p=1055","title":{"rendered":"In Times Gone By And In Times Present"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>In Times Past<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Much of the current social and political debate is about how society is changing for the worst, while others might argue how some things are much better now than in decades or centuries ago. <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Yet nothing is said about how this really compares to the past. <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Here are two examples how things have changed for the better over the last 100 to 150 years: &#8211;<br \/>\n<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Raising_of_school_leaving_age_in_England_and_Wales\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>The School leaving age <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>and<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Life_expectancy\" target=\"_blank\">Life<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.closer.ac.uk\/data\/life-expectancy-birth\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Expenctency<\/a><\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Henry Mayhew<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>I wonder just how many of the younger generation realise just what the reality of life was like in an earlier age<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/London_Labour_and_the_London_Poor\" target=\"_blank\"> as described by Henry Mayhew<\/a>.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Or<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>How many of the younger generation would know about, of ever come upon a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tosher\" target=\"_blank\">Tosher<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mudlark\" target=\"_blank\">Mud Lark<\/a> did? <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Now that might seem like ancient history many people, but some of the descriptions within the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Road_to_Wigan_Pier\" target=\"_blank\">Road to Wigan Pier<\/a> are still within the living memory of many of the older generation.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Housing<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>It&#8217;s not so long ago that a very high percentage of the population lived in bedsits or<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/House_in_multiple_occupation\" target=\"_blank\"> HMOs <\/a>as they are now classed as being.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Remember the expression &#8216;A shilling for the gas&#8217; ?<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Or <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>How it was normal to sleep in the same room as a gas cooker before that become illegal.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i><b>Yes things have improved a lot over the years.<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Yet they have not.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>&#8211; We now have a lot more rough sleepers than in many decades.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>&#8211; Adult education in terms of evening classes is now almost a thing of the past.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>&#8211; While one in seven of UK adults are functionally illiterate to a greater or lesser extent.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>In Times Now <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Margaret Thatcher said that:- \u201cthere is no such thing as society\u201d.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>While many of her supporters said \u201cGreed is Good!\u201d.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>To which there was a response which went:- <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>The family is dead! Long live the family !<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>All of which are totally wrong, but they are attitudes which still prevail to this day.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>In times to come<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Social Change or Social Revolution ?<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>If history and all the recent events have taught us anything, then we must care for both society and the individual.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>That&#8217;s something which compliments the concept of: &#8211; <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"left\"><em><span style=\"font-family: DejaVu Sans, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Think Global Act Local.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In Times Past Much of the current social and political debate is about how society is changing for the worst, while others might argue how some things are much better now than in decades or centuries ago.
