{"id":115,"date":"2009-02-04T08:22:39","date_gmt":"2009-02-04T08:22:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rahu.dk\/martynlowe\/?p=115"},"modified":"2020-12-11T07:53:06","modified_gmt":"2020-12-11T07:53:06","slug":"nonviolent-resistance-to-the-falkland-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.theproject.me.uk\/?p=115","title":{"rendered":"Nonviolent Resistance to the Falkland War."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The overriding mood in Britain the during spring of 1982 was<br \/>\nthat of Jingoism, nationalism, &amp; militarism.<\/p>\n<p>The Falkland Islands had been invaded by the Argentina<br \/>\nmilitary,<br \/>\n&amp; Britain was at War.<\/p>\n<p>In between the Jingoism, nationalism, &amp; militarism: &#8211;<br \/>\nThere were a few of us who were engaged in<br \/>\nAnti Falkland War Activities.<\/p>\n<p>Over the few months of the war there were a lot of small<br \/>\nscale demonstrations,<br \/>\nand three national marches against the war.<\/p>\n<p>Upon one of these demonstrations I was photographed in the<br \/>\ncompany of my comrades from Greenpeace ( London ).<br \/>\nThis photo appeared on the front page of the Morning Star &#8211;<br \/>\nMonday May 10th 1982.<\/p>\n<p>During the period between may day 1982 &amp; the &#8216;victory parade&#8217;<br \/>\non oct 12 of that year:<br \/>\nSome circa 118 people were arrested for Anti-Falkland war<br \/>\nactivities.<\/p>\n<p>Most of these arrests were for small scale,<br \/>\nor symbolic actions against the war.<\/p>\n<p>Some \u00a3515 was raised in donations to cover their fines &amp;<br \/>\nother legal costs.<\/p>\n<p>These figures come from bulletin no 6 of the anti-Falklands<br \/>\nwar support network (March 1983 ), in which I was involved.<\/p>\n<p>This support network was founded on may 24th 1982,<br \/>\nand held its last meeting on February 28th 1983.<\/p>\n<p>The Peace Pledge Union ( P.P.U. ) was engaged in activities<br \/>\nagainst the war,<br \/>\nas was London Peace Action,<br \/>\n&amp;<br \/>\nGreenpeace ( London ).<\/p>\n<p>Peace News published various news stories and back ground<br \/>\narticles upon the situation during the time of the war.<\/p>\n<p>Since then very little has been published about this small<br \/>\ngrass root opposition to the Falkland War.<\/p>\n<p>The archives of the anti-Falklands war support network are<br \/>\nnow held by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ppu.org.uk\/falklands\/falklands1.html\" target=\"_blank\">P.P.U.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180422001417\/http:\/\/libr.org\/isc\/statement-upon-the-25th-anniversary-of-the-malvinasfalklands-war\/\" target=\"_blank\">statement marking the 25th anniversary of the war<\/a> was<br \/>\npublished in Information for Social Change 2007.<\/p>\n<p>What I would like to happen is an oral history project upon<br \/>\nthe resistance to the Falkland War.<\/p>\n<p>Would anyone be interested in undertaking such a project?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The overriding mood in Britain the during spring of 1982 was that of Jingoism, nationalism, &amp; militarism.
