{"id":146,"date":"2009-05-01T05:21:32","date_gmt":"2009-05-01T05:21:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rahu.dk\/martynlowe\/?p=146"},"modified":"2010-05-30T05:12:30","modified_gmt":"2010-05-30T05:12:30","slug":"an-inequitable-taxation-religion-war-resistance-the-charity-commissioners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.theproject.me.uk\/?p=146","title":{"rendered":"An Inequitable Taxation."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Be it the window or Poll tax,<br \/>\nthe question as to what is an equitable or a reasonable<br \/>\ntaxation has always excited a lot of protest.<\/p>\n<p>That is why the question of tax exceptions is one which should<br \/>\nconcern us all.<\/p>\n<p>We all think that we are over taxed,<br \/>\nbut just how many of us think about how just the payment or<br \/>\nnone payment of taxation may be.<\/p>\n<p>At present within Britain all religious comminutes are except<br \/>\nfrom paying any council ( local authority ) tax.<\/p>\n<p>While most of the churches or religious bodies are registered<br \/>\nas Charities,<br \/>\nand thus gain many tax advantages.<\/p>\n<p>Yet Pacifist bodies, ecology action groups have to pay their<br \/>\ntaxes in full.<\/p>\n<p>Why should this be so?<\/p>\n<p>Because under the present law Churches are deemed as being<br \/>\ncharitable bodies,<br \/>\nwhile Pacifist and Eco action organisations are considered to<br \/>\nbe &#8216;political&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>If a group of atheists were to establish a community or body to<br \/>\ncombat the extremes of any religion, then they would not be<br \/>\nable to be registered as a charity,<br \/>\nor get all of the tax benefits which go with this.<\/p>\n<p>That would be deemed to be a political activity.<\/p>\n<p>Yet Religious bodies who campaign against good atheist values<br \/>\ndo get these various tax benefits.<\/p>\n<p>Now just tell me that this is not political?<\/p>\n<p>This makes no sense at all,<br \/>\nas all religions involve themselves in politics,<br \/>\neven if they hide it with the expression:<br \/>\n&#8216; Spreading the word of god &#8216;.<\/p>\n<p>Just to take two examples:<br \/>\n&#8211; They campaign against the rights of women to make their own<br \/>\ndecisions upon contraception and abortion.<br \/>\n&amp;<br \/>\n&#8211; Interfere upon just what may or may not be taught within our<br \/>\nschools.<\/p>\n<p>Just look at the website for the<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.charity-commission.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Charity Commission for England and Wales<\/a><br \/>\nand you will see just how many religious bodies are registered<br \/>\nas charities.<\/p>\n<p>This includes such controversial bodies as the<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rickross.com\/groups\/universal.html\" target=\"_blank\">Universal Church Kingdom of God.<\/a><br \/>\nA church whose activities has aroused a lot of concerns over<br \/>\nthe last few years.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand we have the case of many pacifists who are<br \/>\ntaken to court for refusing to pay any war taxes.<\/p>\n<p>This is despite the fact that Pacifists have a legal right to<br \/>\nexercise a conscientious objection to conscription.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly there is an urgent need to change this system,<br \/>\nand give one the right to exercise a conscientious objection to<br \/>\nall war taxes.<\/p>\n<p>Though the long term aim should really be to abolish all<br \/>\nmilitary organisations.<\/p>\n<p>Equally importantly: &#8211;<br \/>\nThe whole question as to the charitable status of all religious<br \/>\nbodies should be examined,<\/p>\n<p>They should be made to take pay their share of the tax burden,<br \/>\nas it is inequitable that we should all be forced to subsidise<br \/>\nthem this way.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Be it the window or Poll tax, the question as to what is an equitable or a reasonable taxation has always excited a lot of protest.
