{"id":161,"date":"2009-06-14T06:25:12","date_gmt":"2009-06-14T06:25:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rahu.dk\/martynlowe\/?p=161"},"modified":"2010-05-29T14:23:37","modified_gmt":"2010-05-29T14:23:37","slug":"a-walk-in-the-urban-wild-life-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.theproject.me.uk\/?p=161","title":{"rendered":"A Walk In The Urban Wild Life Park."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is something which I keep noticing:<br \/>\na lot of areas of waste land within our city centres.<\/p>\n<p>Areas that have been flattened after various buildings have<br \/>\nbeen pulled down, and which currently serve no socially<br \/>\nuseful purpose.<\/p>\n<p>These are places which are surrounded by fences, and that<br \/>\nare now starting to turn in to urban wildlife areas.<\/p>\n<p>Such patches of waste land are very indicative of just what<br \/>\nhas been happening to society over the last few years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; How certain parts of the economy slowed down and came to a<br \/>\ncomplete standstill.<\/p>\n<p>We now keep being told how the recession is on the turn,<br \/>\nyet I&#8217;ll not believe that the economy is starting to work again:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Not until there are signs that all of these waste grounds are<br \/>\nbeing opened up and new buildings are being constructed.<\/p>\n<p>Yet that is not the end of this story&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->There are also a lot of redundant offices which have been<br \/>\nboarded up for some time now,<br \/>\nand which have notices upon them which indicate that they<br \/>\nwill be demolished at some time or other.<\/p>\n<p>What ever else: &#8211;<br \/>\nNone of these redundant offices blocks are suitable for<br \/>\nconversion in to desperately needed housing,<br \/>\nas it would be cheaper to pull them down and build a new.<\/p>\n<p>This also says a lot about the energy use standards which<br \/>\nexist within offices built during the past 50 years.<\/p>\n<p>So here comes a social dilemma &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>On the one hand there is a desperate need for new low cost,<br \/>\nand energy efficient housing.<\/p>\n<p>Yet there is no money to build such social housing.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand there is a lot of newly flatten &amp; derelict<br \/>\nland that looks like it will not be touched for a lot time to<br \/>\ncome.<\/p>\n<p>One solution may be to formally convert some of these areas<br \/>\nin to Urban Wild Life Parks.<\/p>\n<p>Another idea may be to sell them off to people who wish to use<br \/>\nthem for low cost &amp; ecologically sound self build social<br \/>\nhousing projects:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; As local housing for those who already live in the area.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; For people who will never be able to afford to buy any of the<br \/>\nexisting housing,<br \/>\nand which stand no chance of ever getting any social housing.<\/p>\n<p>There are a lot of ways in which such projects as the above<br \/>\nmight be funded.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe it&#8217;s about time that the building societies got back to<br \/>\ntheir roots,<br \/>\nand put some backing to such projects.<\/p>\n<p>We can all benefit by making sure that these new urban<br \/>\nwastelands are used for more imaginative projects.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps some of them might also be used as allotments.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s no utopian dream to think that something may be achieved<br \/>\nthis way.<\/p>\n<p>Just imagine that &#8230;&#8230;..<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There is something which I keep noticing: a lot of areas of waste land within our city centres.
