{"id":162,"date":"2009-06-18T13:26:34","date_gmt":"2009-06-18T13:26:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rahu.dk\/martynlowe\/?p=162"},"modified":"2010-05-29T14:22:11","modified_gmt":"2010-05-29T14:22:11","slug":"books-to-love-keep-library-books-to-pulp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.theproject.me.uk\/?p=162","title":{"rendered":"Books to Love &#038; Keep &#8211; Library Books to Pulp."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Having a love for books does not mean that I don&#8217;t pulp old<br \/>\nbooks from time to time.<\/p>\n<p>This happens in all public libraries,<br \/>\nand I do it with some of my own outdated books too.<\/p>\n<p>I recently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.librarian.net\/stax\/2839\/a-blog-of-awful-library-books\/#comments\" target=\"_blank\">commented<\/a> upon just why this is something<br \/>\nthat needs to be done.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a summary of just why library books get pulped :<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; There is a major difference between a lending or reference<br \/>\nlibrary, and an archive.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Libraries are not archives.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Any outdated medical or legal book will provide dangerous<br \/>\nmisinformation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Technologies change.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; New editions get published.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Our thinking upon various issues,<br \/>\nsuch as works of art,<br \/>\nchanges over the years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; We constantly discover more and more about the world<br \/>\nabout us.<\/p>\n<p>&amp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Libraries are places in which people find books to educate<br \/>\nthemselves.<\/p>\n<p>To sum this all up:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; People want to be able to access what is the best current<br \/>\ninformation upon any subject,<br \/>\nas opposed to looking a dangerously outdated data or ideas.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Library stock should be the very best possible in order to<br \/>\nachieve these various ends.<\/p>\n<p>Books are not sacred objects,<br \/>\nbut a medium via which to spread information and ideas.<\/p>\n<p>If only more libraries were to explain any or all of the above,<br \/>\nthen we wouldn&#8217;t get such a bad press every time that a book is<br \/>\nwithdrawn from stock.<\/p>\n<p>This needs to be said &#8211; time &amp; time &amp; time again.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Having a love for books does not mean that I don&#8217;t pulp old books from time to time.
