\nManchuria,
\nAustria-Hungary,
\nServia,
\nPeking,
\nSt Petersburg,
\nAnnam,
\nPersia,
\nRhodesia,
\nSilesia,
\nMoravia,
\nGerman South West Africa,
\nGerman East Africa,
\n&
\nThe Belgium Congo.<\/p>\n
Though the more knowledgable of you may be able to place
\nthese counties, regions, or towns upon the map,
\nit might prove be very difficult for those individuals who are a
\nproduct of our modern education system to be able to do so.<\/p>\n
The point being that many of those places have changed their
\nnames since the publication of this atlas,
\nmuch in the same way as national boarders have oscillated
\nover the centuries.<\/p>\n
This is turn might be a very good starting point for a lesson in
\nlinguistics.<\/p>\n
Even a fleeting glance at this atlas will confirm just how
\nmuch the political map of the world has changed over the last
\n100 years.<\/p>\n
It all goes to show that there is nothing static about politics,
\nor just how we see and name the world about us.<\/p>\n
Yet while the Russian, Japanese, Dutch, Austro-Hungarian,
\nFrench, Spanish, British, and German Empires
\nof the last century have long gone,
\nwe are still exploiting the world in the very same way.<\/p>\n
We need to start thinking about the world in global terms,
\nand not via the names of states which will continue to come
\nand go.<\/p>\n
Only then will we be able to start dealing with global issues
\nat a local level,
\nand not be bound to thinking about the short term shifting
