On war &#038; Peace."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As one gets older the more one thinks about death &amp; dying.<\/p>\n<p>This is not because one becomes more maudlin, but results<br \/>\nfrom knowing or having known more people who are now<br \/>\ndead.<\/p>\n<p>Over the last few years I have had to focus more of my<br \/>\nthinking upon the issue of how we might remember our<br \/>\ndead, how to write obituaries, &amp; what is in my will.<\/p>\n<p>All of which I view in terms of how we celebrate live,<br \/>\nwhile I have rewritten my will in terms of helping those<br \/>\nwhom may live on after I&#8217;m gone.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Militarists talk about the &#8216;Glorious dead&#8217;, but I can see<br \/>\nthat there is nothing glorious about how most people die<br \/>\nin war.<\/p>\n<p>I just want to celebrate those peace activists who have<br \/>\nhelped to prevent wars.<\/p>\n<p>People like Ralph DiGia, or Dorothea Woods.<\/p>\n<p>Which brings me on to the following piece by A.A.Milne,<br \/>\nwhich was published in his book:<\/p>\n<p>Peace With Honour<br \/>\nAn enquiry into the war convention.<\/p>\n<p>Published: Methuen &amp; Co Ltd &#8211; London &#8211; 1934.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216; For the average person we could construct a table of<br \/>\nComparative Deaths, which might go like this :<\/p>\n<p>10,000,000 deaths from famine in China<\/p>\n<p>= ( in horror ) 100,000 deaths from earthquake in Sicily<\/p>\n<p>= ( in horror ) 1,000 deaths from influenza in Brighton<\/p>\n<p>= ( in horror ) 10 deaths from typhoid in one\ufffds own villiage<\/p>\n<p>= ( in horror ) 1 sudden death of a friend.<\/p>\n<p>Sudden death of 1,000 friends = ( in horror )<br \/>\nDEATH OF ONESELF.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>The examples may of changed over the years, but the same<br \/>\nkind of idea still holds true today.<\/p>\n<p>Just think of any major disaster throughout the world, &amp;<br \/>\nhow ones national press will focus upon their own<br \/>\ncountries nationals who may of been caught up in the<br \/>\nsituation: &#8211; whether they were killed or not.<\/p>\n<p>There is nothing like death to help focus ones mind.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As one gets older the more one thinks about death &amp; dying.
