{"id":193,"date":"2009-11-18T07:59:04","date_gmt":"2009-11-18T07:59:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rahu.dk\/martynlowe\/?p=193"},"modified":"2010-05-29T13:44:05","modified_gmt":"2010-05-29T13:44:05","slug":"assumptions-or-ask-a-silly-question","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.theproject.me.uk\/?p=193","title":{"rendered":"Assumptions, or Ask A Silly Question."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m always amazed at the way in which people will poss a<br \/>\nquestion to one, and add a set of unsaid assumptions to the<br \/>\nasking.<\/p>\n<p>Here is an example of just what I mean:-<br \/>\nDid you see ( such &amp; such television program ) last night?<\/p>\n<p>The assumption being that one would have a television<br \/>\nmachine.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; I don&#8217;t own one.<br \/>\n&#8211; I don&#8217;t want to own one.<\/p>\n<p>Just throw in the line that you don&#8217;t have a television,<br \/>\nor a television licence,<br \/>\nand just listen to the kind of nonsense I have had to endure<br \/>\nfor many years back.<\/p>\n<p>Ditto the assumption that one should have an extensive<br \/>\nknowledge about so called celebs.<\/p>\n<p>What needs to be kept in mind by those who make such<br \/>\nassumptions,<br \/>\nis that being famous is no indication as to whether they have<br \/>\nmight have anything interesting to say,<br \/>\nor have done anything that might be of real social worth.<\/p>\n<p>Another assumption I keep hearing is that I should buy rather<br \/>\nthan rent a flat.<br \/>\nYet the very same people will tell me just difficult it is to pay<br \/>\ntheir mortgage, even though they may be earning a lot more<br \/>\nthan anyone in libraries will ever be able to earn.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Then there are the questions people will make about my family,<br \/>\nand even grandchildren.<\/p>\n<p>Here the assumption is that one must be married and have<br \/>\nchildren of ones own.<\/p>\n<p>Talk about social stereotyping!<\/p>\n<p>Many people just wouldn&#8217;t like it if they were to be asked a set<br \/>\nof questions which automaticaly assumed that they are single,<\/p>\n<p>e.g.<br \/>\nWhich dating agency they might be using at present?<\/p>\n<p>Just try it out and enjoy the kind of reaction that will evoke.<\/p>\n<p>Then comes the assumption that I would welcome being in a<br \/>\nfamily friendly establishment.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise with background music in public places.<\/p>\n<p>This runs very contrary to my need for silence in which to<br \/>\nread, or study.<\/p>\n<p>There is nothing better than to sit in a quiet pub and read a<br \/>\nbook while enjoying a good pint of beer.<\/p>\n<p>Ditto in a cafe with a coffee or glass of wine.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m always on the look out for places in which I can do the<br \/>\nabove.<\/p>\n<p>I only wish that they would put up a notice which might say: &#8211;<br \/>\nThis Establishment is Grumpy Old Men Friendly.<\/p>\n<p>Next on my list is the assumption that one would welcome being<br \/>\ntold such a thing as: &#8216;God loves you&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Talk about insulting ones intelligence!<\/p>\n<p>There is a friend of mine who would place an ASBO<br \/>\n( Anti-Social Behaviour Order )<br \/>\non anyone who stood up and shouted about religion on the<br \/>\nstreets.<\/p>\n<p>I might not like the whole concept of using ASBOs,<br \/>\nbut in this case I&#8217;m inclined to agree with him.<\/p>\n<p>I could go on and on with many similar examples,<br \/>\nbut I figure that you get the idea.<\/p>\n<p>One of the nice things about being involved in radical circles<br \/>\nis that one does not have to deal with such sets of automatic<br \/>\nassumptions.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe that&#8217;s why I enjoy knocking around in radical circles.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m always amazed at the way in which people will poss a question to one, and add a set of unsaid assumptions to the asking.
