At school I was taught how to read an ordinance survey map.<\/p>\n
The maps I was bought up on showed all the railway lines,
\nand shipping routes.<\/p>\n
We would refer to the Great North Road,
\nor where a road started or ended.<\/p>\n
Road maps were not a mess of meaningless numbers,
\nbut were descriptive of the places marked upon them.<\/p>\n
It was also a time in which weather maps showed millibar lines
\nupon then.<\/p>\n
If I looked at the contour numbers upon a map I see just how
\nsteep the landscape might be.<\/p>\n
If I looked at the millibar numbers then I can judge just what the
\nweather might be doing.<\/p>\n
My how things have changed!<\/p>\n
We have satellite navigation for those who can not read
\nordinance survey maps,
\n&
\nWeather maps which remind me of children’s picture books.<\/p>\n
I keep reading about the dumbing down of education in terms
\nof grammar, spelling, and numeracy,
\nbut that’s only a part of the problem.<\/p>\n
This kind of dumbing down would also seem to extend to the
\nfact that people are being given statistical information in a
\nvery simplistic form.<\/p>\n
Now I do understand that some people are unable to read a lot
\nof information from any form of statistical data,
\nand that they might not be able to understand a complex
\nweather map.<\/p>\n
Yet that is no reason for dumbing down the information which
\nis presented to us in the media.<\/p>\n
Is it any wonder that the newspaper industry is in decline,
\nwhen all they can do is present news stories in such a very
\nsimplistic form?<\/p>\n
Call me an intellectual snob if you will,
\nbut I want to read information that is information,
