{"id":271,"date":"2010-06-08T05:55:49","date_gmt":"2010-06-08T05:55:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theproject.me.uk\/?p=271"},"modified":"2010-06-08T05:55:49","modified_gmt":"2010-06-08T05:55:49","slug":"insuring-the-uninsurable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.theproject.me.uk\/?p=271","title":{"rendered":"Insuring the Uninsurable."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Anyone who has ever had anything to do with Insurance will<br \/>\ntell you that it is all to do with assessing risks,<br \/>\nand measuring the amount of damage which\u00a0 might or may of<br \/>\noccurred.<\/p>\n<p>It may all look like a form of gambling on disasters not taking<br \/>\nplace,<br \/>\nbut it is all based upon a formular of tried and tested<br \/>\nstatistical tables.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why insurance policies are so complex,<br \/>\nand include so many exclusion clauses.<\/p>\n<p>Break just one of those clauses,<br \/>\nor do something silly,<br \/>\nand your insurance claim becomes invalid.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes natural diasters occur.<br \/>\nIn the old days they were refereed to as \u2018Acts of God\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Nature is unpredictable,<br \/>\nand you can never front see everything which might go wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Even with the best insurance in the world,<br \/>\nall you will get is a \u2018Replacing like for like\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Yet you can\u2019t replace human life.<\/p>\n<p>Which brings me on to the question of nukiller power.<\/p>\n<p>The construction and running of nukiller reactors involves<br \/>\nspending heap loads of money,<br \/>\nand still there is no way in which you can guarantee this will<br \/>\nmake you a profit.<\/p>\n<p>If they go wrong,<br \/>\nthen it will cost even more money to clean up the resulting<br \/>\necological mess.<\/p>\n<p>This is why most of the building of nukiller power reactors<br \/>\nhas been underwritten by the state.<\/p>\n<p>Now in these difficult economic times more and more<br \/>\ngovernments are becoming very reluctant to underpin the<br \/>\nfinances of the nukiller industry.<\/p>\n<p>While the industry is still pushing for more government<br \/>\nsubsidies before committing themselves to building new<br \/>\nreactors.<\/p>\n<p>They just don\u2019t want to pay for the long term costs of<br \/>\ndismantling\u00a0 the reactors,<br \/>\nor safely storing all of the radioactive waste.<\/p>\n<p>Longer term the insure costs involved in the safe storage of<br \/>\nnukiller waste are also very unpredictable indeed.<\/p>\n<p>It will take just one so called \u2018accident\u2019 to occur at a nukiller<br \/>\nwaste storage plant for the insurance premium of all the rest<br \/>\nof these plants to become so very unrealistic high,<br \/>\nthat most companies would not be able to pay for it all.<\/p>\n<p>That in turn might mean that a lot of the Lloyds underwriters<br \/>\nmay also become very reluctant to take on such high risks.<\/p>\n<p>That is why just in insurance costs alone it would be<br \/>\ninadvisable for any one ,or any company, to put money in to<br \/>\nnukiller power industry.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Anyone who has ever had anything to do with Insurance will tell you that it is all to do with assessing risks, and measuring the amount of damage which\u00a0 might or may of occurred.
