{"id":273,"date":"2010-06-15T19:17:32","date_gmt":"2010-06-15T19:17:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theproject.me.uk\/?p=273"},"modified":"2010-06-15T19:17:32","modified_gmt":"2010-06-15T19:17:32","slug":"pensions-or-here%e2%80%99s-the-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.theproject.me.uk\/?p=273","title":{"rendered":"Pensions or Here\u2019s The Deal&#8230;."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For a lot of people on low salaries there is but one<br \/>\ncompensation to be had,<br \/>\nand that is a reasonable pension,<br \/>\nor at least one which does not mean living in dire poverty<br \/>\nafter retirement.<\/p>\n<p>One of the consequences of low pay is never being able to<br \/>\nown ones own property,<br \/>\nand so having to pay rent until the day one dies.<\/p>\n<p>Work in libraries and you will both earn far less that an<br \/>\naverage salary,<br \/>\nand never be able to own the place you live in.<\/p>\n<p>Now both the UK government,<br \/>\nand many financial bodies are claiming that all public sector<br \/>\nworkers are receiving pensions which are<br \/>\n\u2018Too generous\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Not a word do they say about how state pensions are so low<br \/>\nthat they are below the poverty line.<\/p>\n<p>Not a word about increasing the level of public worker<br \/>\npensions to that which is enjoyed by finance workers.<\/p>\n<p>Not a word about giving \u2018key worker\u2019 status to all low paid<br \/>\nlibrary workers.<\/p>\n<p>Not a word upon the need to increase the level of state<br \/>\npensions.<\/p>\n<p>The self contradictions which result from all of the above<br \/>\nfacts needs to be faced up to.<\/p>\n<p>The choice is obvious in terms of preventing poverty in<br \/>\nretirement.<\/p>\n<p>Either: &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Pay library workers more in order that we may be able to<br \/>\nboth purchase their own properties,<br \/>\nand save enough for their old age.<\/p>\n<p>or<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Keep the present public sector pensions at the same levels.<\/p>\n<p>Failure to do so will mean that yet more people will not be<br \/>\nable to undertake working in public libraries,<br \/>\nand we will all suffer as a result!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For a lot of people on low salaries there is but one compensation to be had, and that is a reasonable pension, or at least one which does not mean living in dire poverty after retirement.
