{"id":278,"date":"2010-07-25T15:49:43","date_gmt":"2010-07-25T15:49:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theproject.me.uk\/?p=278"},"modified":"2010-07-25T15:49:43","modified_gmt":"2010-07-25T15:49:43","slug":"percentage-figures-and-gross-effects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.theproject.me.uk\/?p=278","title":{"rendered":"Percentage Figures and Gross Effects."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week I saw an advertisement which claims that one in<br \/>\neight of the people who use the tube are victims of identity<br \/>\ntheft.<\/p>\n<p>I just sat there and thought that equates to12.5% of the<br \/>\npopulation,<br \/>\nwhich must also mean that 87.5% of the population do not<br \/>\nsuffer from any form of identify theft.<\/p>\n<p>The interesting difference between saying 1 in 8<br \/>\nand 87.5%<br \/>\nis that one of them sounds alarmingly high number,<br \/>\nwhile the other sounds like\u00a0 a reasonably low percentage.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps that\u2019s why I always like to see the raw statistics,<br \/>\nrather than any one else\u2019s interpretation of just what they<br \/>\nmight mean.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to any fiscal or population figures then it<br \/>\nmakes a lot of sense to do so.<\/p>\n<p>For even 1% of a population can equate to many thousands of<br \/>\npeople, which in turn will equate to many thousands of<br \/>\nindividual tragedies.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to percentage cuts in public finances it is not a<br \/>\nquestion of looking at the figures,<br \/>\nbut just what this means to individuals,<br \/>\nand the social impact it will have upon the population as a<br \/>\nwhole.<\/p>\n<p>There is a very good argument that all social services should<br \/>\nbe protected.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand there is a conservative argument that<br \/>\npeople should not be encouraged to stay within a benefits<br \/>\nreliant culture,<br \/>\nbut do something in order to help themselves.<\/p>\n<p>The problem with this comes with a belief that this can be<br \/>\nsolved with a totally unrealistic and totally unatonable<br \/>\n\u2018enterprise culture\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>There is an old socialist saying:<br \/>\n\u2018 From each according to his abilities<br \/>\nFrom each according to his means.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>I would agree with the conservatives that we do need to get<br \/>\naway from a benefit reliant culture,<br \/>\nbut that must mean setting up more self help projects,<br \/>\nwhile also establishing more workers &amp; consumer<br \/>\nco-operatives.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps it is time to look at the figures again,<br \/>\nand see just what will work of the benefit of all.<\/p>\n<p>Talk of cutting public expenditure by 25% may sound very<br \/>\ndraconian,<br \/>\nbut cutting military expenditure be 100% would be most<br \/>\nwelcome indeed.<\/p>\n<p>It might also be worth while if we could all start to think of<br \/>\npublic expenditure in terms of encouraging social cooperatives.<\/p>\n<p>If cuts are on the way, then we are going to really need to<br \/>\nmoney in to those\u00a0 projects which would benefits us all,<br \/>\nrather than just keep paying out money to the individual.<\/p>\n<p>Failure to do so will mean a lot more poverty stricken<br \/>\nindividuals that will need some sort of fiscal help.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not the percentage figures which matter,<br \/>\nbut just what those figures mean within the real world.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week I saw an advertisement which claims that one in eight of the people who use the tube are victims of identity theft.
