{"id":293,"date":"2010-10-29T06:19:14","date_gmt":"2010-10-29T06:19:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theproject.me.uk\/?p=293"},"modified":"2010-10-29T06:27:53","modified_gmt":"2010-10-29T06:27:53","slug":"referencing-the-imperial-war-museum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.theproject.me.uk\/?p=293","title":{"rendered":"Referencing the  Imperial War Museum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Imperial War Museum (<a href=\"http:\/\/london.iwm.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\"> IWM<\/a> ) has changed a lot since I first<br \/>\nvisited it some time around 1963.<\/p>\n<p>I still have a very strong impression of just what the museum<br \/>\nwas like at the time,<br \/>\nand the displays upon the horrors of World War One.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been back to the IWM several times over the years since<br \/>\nthen.<\/p>\n<p>I Recently went on a librarians visit to the new<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/london.iwm.org.uk\/server\/show\/nav.24479\" target=\"_blank\">Explore History Centre<\/a> within the IWM.<\/p>\n<p>The Explore centre replaces what used to be the Museum<br \/>\nLibrary, and is a good starting place for anyone who wishes to<br \/>\nlearn more about the various aspects of the various wars<br \/>\nwhich Britain has been involved in since the turn of the 19th<br \/>\ncentury.<\/p>\n<p>Not only can one access the books and papers which are held<br \/>\nwithin the museum,<br \/>\nbut it\u2019s audio visual materials too.<\/p>\n<p>This is also the starting point from which one may undertake<br \/>\nsome research in to ones family history,<br \/>\nbut find out about how wars have been waged during the 20th<br \/>\ncentury.<\/p>\n<p>The idea behind the Explore Centre is that what is held within<br \/>\nthe Museum should be easily available to everyone.<\/p>\n<p>Both World War One &amp; Two were \u2018peoples wars\u2019,<br \/>\nand the collection is a reflection of this very fact.<\/p>\n<p>Thus the Museum has a vast collection of books, documents,<br \/>\nand other items upon the subject of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ppu.org.uk\/learn\/infodocs\/cos\/st_co_wwone3s1.html\" target=\"_blank\">Conscientious Objection<\/a>,<br \/>\ntogether with many sound recording made by COs.<\/p>\n<p>e.g.<br \/>\nby <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iwm.org.uk\/searchlight\/server.php?show=nav.24437\" target=\"_blank\">Harold Bing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Amongst the items I was shown the last letter of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edith_Cavell\" target=\"_blank\">Edith Cavell<\/a>,<br \/>\nwhos statue <a href=\"http:\/\/www.womeninblack.org.uk\/UK.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Women In Black<\/a> hold their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.womeninblack.org.uk\/London.htm\" target=\"_blank\">vigils<\/a>,<br \/>\n&amp;<br \/>\na collection of letters from people who were on <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/RMS_Lusitania\" target=\"_blank\">the Lusitania<\/a><br \/>\nwhen it was torpedoed in 1915.<\/p>\n<p>The IWM has a holding of over 5 miles of books,<br \/>\n50,000 badges,<br \/>\nand the largest collection of paintings within the UK.<\/p>\n<p>So you should be able to find something of interst for<br \/>\neveryone.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Imperial War Museum ( IWM ) has changed a lot since I first visited it some time around 1963.
