{"id":296,"date":"2010-11-10T07:43:23","date_gmt":"2010-11-10T07:43:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theproject.me.uk\/?p=296"},"modified":"2010-11-24T08:00:32","modified_gmt":"2010-11-24T08:00:32","slug":"work-time-study-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.theproject.me.uk\/?p=296","title":{"rendered":"Work Time &#8211; Study Time."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>University education is not an automatic right,<br \/>\nbut something which is a privilege.<\/p>\n<p>In many parts of the world even the most rudimentary form of<br \/>\neducation is something which a lot of people still strive for.<\/p>\n<p>Those of us who are in our 60s &amp; over can remember a time<br \/>\nwhen university was only available for those who came from a<br \/>\nwealthy background,<br \/>\nwhile the majority of the population started work at 15 or<br \/>\nearlier.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>When my father wanted to get some qualifications in order to<br \/>\nimprove his prospects at work, then he had to get his City &amp;<br \/>\nGuilds qualification by studying it at evening classes.<\/p>\n<p>That was the way in which things were done in an earlier age.<\/p>\n<p>An age in which the expression \u2018Gap Year\u2019 did not exist.<\/p>\n<p>You just left school and went straight in to work.<\/p>\n<p>If you came from the working class then getting to go to<br \/>\nuniversity was an unthinkable dream for most people until<br \/>\nsome time around within the 1970s.<\/p>\n<p>Yet even then it was more something which the middle class<br \/>\nwas able to achieve.<\/p>\n<p>The majority of the working class still just left school and<br \/>\nwent straight in to the work force.<\/p>\n<p>In this earlier age there was a higher regard for education,<br \/>\nand even more so for self education.<\/p>\n<p>It was also a time in which the expectation was to work for 50<br \/>\nyears before receiving a state pension.<\/p>\n<p>You worked long and hard for your pension, and there was no<br \/>\nfree university education for all.<\/p>\n<p>This is of course the other side of the question of extending<br \/>\nthe age at which the state pension kicks in.<\/p>\n<p>i.e.<br \/>\nHow pensions might best be looked at in terms of how long one<br \/>\nhas made a contribution within the workforce.<\/p>\n<p>Students might well complain about having to pay more for<br \/>\ntheir education, but the alternative might be that they might<br \/>\nhave to see their working lives extended to that which was<br \/>\nvery normal for the older generations.<\/p>\n<p>Yes it is all so very unfair, but that\u2019s just the problem which<br \/>\ncomes from living in a world where education is regarded as<br \/>\njust another commodity.<\/p>\n<p>We all pay one way or another.<\/p>\n<p>Yet education is not just about the acquisition of knowledge,<br \/>\nbut about how to increase those skills which might bring<br \/>\nbetter wealth for us all.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to education we should all remember the old<br \/>\nsaying: &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>\u2018 To each according to ones abilities,<br \/>\nfrom each according to ones means,\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Of course the ideal should be free education,<br \/>\nand a \u2018living wage\u2019 pension for us all,<br \/>\nbut we just don\u2019t live in that kind of world.<\/p>\n<p>We are now living in an era of rising unemployment, and far<br \/>\nless money being spent upon basic social needs.<\/p>\n<p>So perhaps we need to rethink just what higher education is<br \/>\nall about, rather than just concentrate upon how it is to be<br \/>\npaid for.<\/p>\n<p>Which brings me back to the question of how we might<br \/>\nencourage more people to undertake some self education,<br \/>\nand just what kind of skills really do need to be taught within<br \/>\nthe schools.<\/p>\n<p>The questions of university tuition fees is not just about how it<br \/>\nis paid for, but what We All Need to get out of any form of<br \/>\neducation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>University education is not an automatic right, but something which is a privilege.
