{"id":362,"date":"2012-01-01T08:30:38","date_gmt":"2012-01-01T08:30:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theproject.me.uk\/?p=362"},"modified":"2012-01-01T09:54:15","modified_gmt":"2012-01-01T09:54:15","slug":"reykjavik-city-library","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.theproject.me.uk\/?p=362","title":{"rendered":"Reykjav\u00edk City Library"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of my highlights of last year was to be given a tour around<br \/>\nthe<a href=\"http:\/\/www.borgarbokasafn.is\/desktopdefault.aspx\/tabid-3170\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Reykjav\u00edk City Library<\/a>, which is housed in a converted<br \/>\nwarehouse in the city centre.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0 same building also houses the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ljosmyndasafnreykjavikur.is\/english\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\"> Reykjav\u00edk Photo Museum<\/a>,<br \/>\nand Reykjavik Municipal Archives.<\/p>\n<p>Just how the library was founded and grew is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.borgarbokasafn.is\/desktopdefault.aspx\/tabid-3171\/5094_read-11913\/\" target=\"_blank\">an interesting history <\/a>in itself.<\/p>\n<p>Opened in 1919 it was in part funded by the sale of fishing vessels<br \/>\nowned by the City to France in 1917.<\/p>\n<p>Right from the start the\u00a0 library lent out cases of books to ships.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Cultural Centre. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What I really like about the library is that it is used both cultural<br \/>\nand information centre.<\/p>\n<p>During the summer the library hosts<a href=\"http:\/\/www.borgarbokasafn.is\/desktopdefault.aspx\/tabid-3170\/5093_read-26989\/\" target=\"_blank\"> literary walking tours<\/a><br \/>\naround the centre of\u00a0 Reykjav\u00edk.<\/p>\n<p>While the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.borgarbokasafn.is\/desktopdefault.aspx\/tabid-3170\/5093_read-25814\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018Let\u2019s read the papers!\u2019<\/a> provides guidance for those who<br \/>\nwant to read the Icelandic news papers and understand what\u2019s<br \/>\ngoing on in Iceland.<\/p>\n<p>There is also a small cinema area within the library.\u00a0 At the time<br \/>\nof my visit it was screening early German films.<\/p>\n<p>The library works with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artotek.is\/\" target=\"_blank\">Art\u00f3teki<\/a>,<br \/>\nwhich\u00a0 rents and sells arts works of art\u00a0 by Icelandic artists.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Library Matters.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here is a summary of just how the library operates.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; In all there are 85 library staff in city, with 35 of them based in<br \/>\nthe main library.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; All accessioning and book preparation work is done in house.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; The library uses a Danish version of the Dewey Classification<br \/>\nsystem.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; The library works in co-operation with <a href=\"http:\/\/lists.webjunction.org\/libweb\/Iceland.html\" target=\"_blank\">other libraries within Iceland<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; It is member of <a href=\"http:\/\/nordiccamps.ning.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nordic Camps<\/a> &#8211; The Network of Nordic Public Libraries.<\/p>\n<p>&amp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; There is a very good stock of both Manga and none Icelandic<br \/>\nbooks which are available for loan.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly enough the highest number of\u00a0 immigrants in<br \/>\nIceland come from Poland.<\/p>\n<p>If your ever in Reykjav\u00edk,\u00a0 then you should make sure to pop in to<br \/>\nthe library.<\/p>\n<p>I should also like to thank<a href=\"http:\/\/notendur.centrum.is\/~einarol\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Einar \u00d3lafsson<\/a> for showing me around<br \/>\nthe library.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of my highlights of last year was to be given a tour around the Reykjav\u00edk City Library, which is housed in a converted warehouse in the city centre.
