{"id":398,"date":"2012-05-15T07:45:39","date_gmt":"2012-05-15T07:45:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theproject.me.uk\/?p=398"},"modified":"2012-05-15T08:11:27","modified_gmt":"2012-05-15T08:11:27","slug":"present-and-future-nukiller-power-problems-part-two-islands-in-the-making","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.theproject.me.uk\/?p=398","title":{"rendered":"Present And Future Nukiller Power Problems &#8211; Part  Two &#8211; Islands In The Making."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Right Now.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is an increasingly optimistic prospect that the proposed two<br \/>\nnew EDF nukiller plants at<a href=\"http:\/\/www.eveningnews24.co.uk\/news\/sizewell_power_plant_s_future_fears_raised_1_1372254\" target=\"_blank\"> Sizewell<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/environment\/2012\/may\/14\/hinkley-nuclear-power-station-delay\" target=\"_blank\">Hinkley<\/a> may not be<br \/>\nbuilt.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=POvT0RuHo-k&amp;feature=share\" target=\"_blank\">If Centrica be also be persuaded<\/a> to pull out of new build,<br \/>\nthen what we will have left are just the existing plants to close down within the UK.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In to the future.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The real problem with campaigning about nukiller power is that<br \/>\nit involves some very long term thinking.<\/p>\n<p>Within 30 &#8211; 40 years Sizewell could be a island if sea levels<br \/>\ncontinue to rise as the result of global warming.<\/p>\n<p>While at<a href=\"http:\/\/www.itv.com\/news\/anglia\/2012-05-09\/decommissioning-of-one-of-the-regions-nuclear-power-stations-continues\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Bradwell<\/a> the decommissioning process<br \/>\nwill not be completed until 2087.<\/p>\n<p>That is 75 years from now,<br \/>\nby which time all of the current anti-nukiller power activists will be dead.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In to the centuries to come.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This says nothing about all the other<a href=\"http:\/\/www.corecumbria.co.uk\/default.htm\" target=\"_blank\"> long term problems <\/a>about<br \/>\nthe safe storage of nukiller waste which\u00a0 will pose major problems<br \/>\nin the centuries to come.<\/p>\n<p>In other words: &#8211;<br \/>\nWe not only need to think about short term campaign to stop new<br \/>\nbuild and closing down the existing nukiller plants,<br \/>\nbut make sure that what\u2019s left over at the plants does not become<br \/>\nan environmental danger in the years to come.<\/p>\n<p>This means we will all need to do some very long term thinking,<br \/>\nand that must also be a very different way of thinking.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gothic thinking.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It all reminds me about those who built the Gothic cathedrals.<\/p>\n<p>They would plan and work upon them,<br \/>\nwhile also knowing that they would be long dead after the<br \/>\nbuildings were completed.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a very long term vision of a nukiller free world which we now<br \/>\nneed to start thinking upon.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a very long term campaign for us all.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Right Now.
