{"id":406,"date":"2012-05-29T06:06:07","date_gmt":"2012-05-29T06:06:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theproject.me.uk\/?p=406"},"modified":"2012-05-29T06:12:14","modified_gmt":"2012-05-29T06:12:14","slug":"a-long-term-story-about-never-never-land","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.theproject.me.uk\/?p=406","title":{"rendered":"A Long Term Story About Never Never Land."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When I was a child in the 1950s and 1960s people would talk about purchasing items on the \u2018 Never Never\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>i.e.\u00a0 By hire purchase.<\/p>\n<p>This expression goes with the<br \/>\n\u2018Use Now and Pay Later\u2019<br \/>\nway of thinking.<\/p>\n<p>It also goes hand in hand with a way of thinking which includes<br \/>\nthat of paying by credit card,<br \/>\n\u2018pay day loans\u2019,<br \/>\nincreasing personal loans<br \/>\nbuilding up national debts,<br \/>\nand in turn the kind of global financial mess we are all so familiar<br \/>\nwith right now.<\/p>\n<p>The same principle also seems to apply when it comes to just how<br \/>\nwe all will have to continue to pay to look after nukiller waste for<br \/>\nmany centuries after these plants have been closed.<\/p>\n<p>The Daily Mail has just published the following news story which<br \/>\nillustrates this point:-<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-2113327\/The-toxic-pond-Europe-Sellafield-cost-10bn-make-safe--Harold-Wilson-wont-pay-it.html\" target=\"_blank\">The most toxic pond in Europe: Sellafield will cost \u00a310bn to make safe<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the same news story they point out that once the nuclear fuel is<br \/>\nremoved from the newly decommissioned nukiller power plant at<br \/>\nOldbury, that these used fuel rods will be stored untouched upon site until at least 2096.<\/p>\n<p>That is some 84 years in to the future.<\/p>\n<p>If nukiller power is the ultimate example of \u2018built in obsolescence\u2019,<br \/>\nthen we really are going to take a long time to pay for it on the<br \/>\nNever Never.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When I was a child in the 1950s and 1960s people would talk about purchasing items on the \u2018 Never Never\u2019. i.e.\u00a0 By hire purchase.
