{"id":414,"date":"2012-06-11T07:12:01","date_gmt":"2012-06-11T07:12:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theproject.me.uk\/?p=414"},"modified":"2012-06-11T07:34:01","modified_gmt":"2012-06-11T07:34:01","slug":"setting-the-standards-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.theproject.me.uk\/?p=414","title":{"rendered":"Setting The Standards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are some things which just annoy me,<br \/>\nthose which worry me,<br \/>\nand others which really alarm me.<\/p>\n<p>Fire extinguishers being used to prop doors open,<br \/>\na failure to appreciate the importance of regular fire equipment<br \/>\ntests,<br \/>\nmissed fire drills,<br \/>\n&amp;<br \/>\nthe failure to hold regular health and safety surveys combine all<br \/>\nof the above for me.<\/p>\n<p>It is not because I\u2019m worried about all the fire or Health and<br \/>\nSafety regulations as such.<\/p>\n<p>It is not because I\u2019m worried about complying with the legal<br \/>\nrequirements to do so.<\/p>\n<p>My concerns are far more fundemental than that.<\/p>\n<p>It is because failing to deal with these things can result in either<br \/>\nsomeone being either killed or seriously injured.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Failures in the past. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It was a failure to deal with the dangers of fire in the past which<br \/>\nresulted in the kind of fire regulations which we now have in place.<\/p>\n<p>For example: &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ilr.cornell.edu\/trianglefire\/\" target=\"_blank\">Triange fire<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The<a href=\"http:\/\/www.firetactics.com\/KINGSCROSS.htm\" target=\"_blank\"> Kings Cross fire<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.london-fire.gov.uk\/AnniversaryTooleyStreetFire.asp\" target=\"_blank\">Tooley Street fire<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&amp;<\/p>\n<p>That at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.london-fire.gov.uk\/VictorianTheatreFires.asp\" target=\"_blank\">Alhambra Theatre<\/a> which resulted in the creation of theatre fire curtains.<\/p>\n<p>It was also as a result of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tuc.org.uk\/workplace\/index.cfm?mins=130&amp;minors=124&amp;majorsubjectid=2\" target=\"_blank\">trade union action<\/a> to save peoples lives<br \/>\nthat these health and safety regulations came in to place in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>This is<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hazardscampaign.org.uk\/charter\/charter.htm\" target=\"_blank\"> an ongoing campaign<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Setting the standards.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We should not be forever going on about it\u2019s a nuisance,<br \/>\nor costs too much money and time to do.<\/p>\n<p>We should not just be complying with the various fire,<br \/>\nor Health &amp; Safety standards.<\/p>\n<p>We should\u00a0 setting our own much higher standards.<\/p>\n<p>This goes hand in hand with campaigning to improve what are in<br \/>\nthe building regulions.<\/p>\n<p>As radicals we should be working to create living spaces which<br \/>\ngo way beyond the regulations,<br \/>\nand show just how this can be done.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meanwhile in Cumbria.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Which brings me on to the very latest <a href=\"http:\/\/www.healthandsafety-jobs.co.uk\/jobs\/view\/190372\" target=\"_blank\">job vacancy<\/a> for the<br \/>\nCivil Nuclear Constabulary.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s for a Health and Safety Officer based at Windscale\/<br \/>\nSellafield.<\/p>\n<p>The best line in this ad being:<\/p>\n<p>\u2018 We help keep the nation safe.
