{"id":44,"date":"2008-05-17T09:22:21","date_gmt":"2008-05-17T09:22:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rahu.dk\/martynlowe\/?p=44"},"modified":"2010-05-31T05:06:57","modified_gmt":"2010-05-31T05:06:57","slug":"i-won%e2%80%99t-stand-for-the-national-anthem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.theproject.me.uk\/?p=44","title":{"rendered":"I Won&#8217;t Stand for the National Anthem."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is a myth that International sporting events help to<br \/>\nenhance global friendships.<\/p>\n<p>When any sports man or sports woman wins an event,<br \/>\nthen we get the joy of everyone standing to attention while<br \/>\ntheir individual national anthems are being played.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a good job that most people don&#8217;t know or speak more<br \/>\nthan a couple of languages.<\/p>\n<p>If more people could understand the words of most national anthems, then it might result in an international punch up.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><!--<\/p-->\n<p>Just a cursory examination of a lot of national anthems<br \/>\nwill led one to the conclusion that most of them must of<br \/>\nbeen penned by a lot of xenophobic militarists, or religious<br \/>\nbigots.<\/p>\n<p>Many of these songs both ask a god to help them, while<br \/>\nstating they must also fight to defend themselves from<br \/>\nbeing enslaved by some foreign power.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few lines from various national anthems which<br \/>\nillustrate the point: &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Cuba &#8211;<br \/>\n&#8216; Run to the battle, Bayameses.&#8217;<br \/>\n&amp;<br \/>\n&#8216; To die for the country is to live! &#8216;<\/p>\n<p>The Irish Republic &#8211;<br \/>\nThis national anthem is also known as<br \/>\nThe Solders Song.<br \/>\n&#8216; Soldiers we are, whose lives are pledged to Ireland. &#8216;<\/p>\n<p>Latvia &#8211;<br \/>\n&#8216; Bless Latvia, O god &#8216;<\/p>\n<p>Mexico &#8211;<br \/>\n&#8216; Mexicans, at the cry of war<br \/>\nMake ready your sword and your horse &#8216;<\/p>\n<p>Pakistan &#8211;<br \/>\n&#8216; Blessed be the sacred land&#8230;.<br \/>\nLand of Pakistan<br \/>\nBlessed be thou citadel of faith, &#8216;<\/p>\n<p>Saudia Arabia &#8211;<br \/>\n&#8216; My country, may you always live,<br \/>\nThe glory of all muslims!<br \/>\nLong live the King,<br \/>\nFor the flag and the country! &#8216;<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine &#8211;<br \/>\n&#8216; All our foes will surely perish,<br \/>\nlike our dew under sunray. &#8216;<\/p>\n<p>Uganda &#8211;<br \/>\n&#8216; Oh Uganda! May god uphold thee. &#8216;<\/p>\n<p>Vietnam &#8211;<br \/>\n&#8216; Soldiers of Vietnam, we go forward,<br \/>\nWith the will to save our Fatherland. &#8216;<\/p>\n<p>Zimbabwe &#8211;<br \/>\n&#8216; Oh lift high the banner, the flag of Zimbabwe<br \/>\nThe symbol of freedom proclaiming victory;<br \/>\nWe praise our heroes&#8217; sacrifice,<br \/>\nAnd vow to keep our land from foes;<br \/>\nAnd may the Almighty protect and bless our land. &#8216;<\/p>\n<p>What I do like is the Spanish national anthem, as it is a tune<br \/>\nwith no words.<\/p>\n<p>In my 20s I used to march under the banner:<\/p>\n<p>Mother Earth not Fatherland.<\/p>\n<p>If only more people would just start to think about things<br \/>\nthat way!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There is a myth that International sporting events help to enhance global friendships.
