{"id":445,"date":"2012-10-28T08:06:54","date_gmt":"2012-10-28T08:06:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theproject.me.uk\/?p=445"},"modified":"2012-10-28T08:07:56","modified_gmt":"2012-10-28T08:07:56","slug":"a-little-long-term-thinking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.theproject.me.uk\/?p=445","title":{"rendered":"A Little Long Term Thinking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Problems Solved.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I keep hearing people being very pessimistic about our future<br \/>\nprospects due to climate change,<br \/>\nand yet there are still many things which we can all do in order to<br \/>\nstop this ecological disaster from completely destroying us all.<\/p>\n<p>Yet it\u2019s not so long ago that we all faced other ecological<br \/>\nproblems which are no longer with us.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; We no longer have cadmium used in plastic toys.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Tin soldiers are a thing of the past.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; A \u2018Pea Souper\u2019 is now just an historical expression.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Drums of low lever nukiller waste are no longer dumped in to the Atlantic.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; We no longer build our homes with cancer causing asbestos.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; There is now an international ban on the use of\u00a0 PCBs<br \/>\n[ polychlorinated biphenyl ].<\/p>\n<p>&amp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; We no longer discharge untreated sewage in to many rivers throughout the world.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Problems Still To Be Solved.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a good record so far, but we still have a lot more to do.<\/p>\n<p>Though the task list might be a short one it could we a while<br \/>\nbefore we complete these tasks: &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Reafforestation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Stopping over population.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; No longer using climate changing fuels.<\/p>\n<p>&amp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Closing\u00a0 down the Nukiller power industry.<\/p>\n<p>Yet it is the longer term which we really do need to be thinking about.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Starting with the decades and still working on the same issues for centuries to come.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the major problems with Nukiller power is that it takes<br \/>\nmany decades to decommission these plants.<\/p>\n<p>The current and future problem being that it will take between<br \/>\n100 &amp; 120 years before all the existing fuel rods are cool enough<br \/>\nto move. That\u2019s not my line, but what we have been told by those<br \/>\nwho run these plants.<\/p>\n<p>Then all the highly radioactive &amp; chemically complex waste will<br \/>\nneed to be stored: &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Not just centuries, but many thousands of years to come.<\/p>\n<p>So far there have been many ideas put forward about how to deal with this waste,<br \/>\nbut no realistic solutions are in sight.<\/p>\n<p><strong>27013<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If dealing with this waste was ever to be added to the electricity<br \/>\nfuel bill which we all pay for,<br \/>\nthen it would equate to a life after life mortgage for many many<br \/>\ngenerations to come.<\/p>\n<p>It would be like asking the average taxpayer to contribute to the<br \/>\nbuilding of the Great Wall of China, the Pyramids, Stone Henge,<br \/>\nWells Cathedral, and for that debt to continue until the year 27013.<\/p>\n<p>The year 27013 being based upon the half life of plutonium,<br \/>\nbut of course it will still be very dangerous for a lot longer than that.<\/p>\n<p>Now this is were the really scary issue kicks in.<\/p>\n<p>Most current anti-nukiller campaigning centres around stopping new plants being built,<br \/>\nand the current ones closed down.<\/p>\n<p>Yet that is just the start of our long term problems.<\/p>\n<p>We need to be thinking and campaigning upon just what will happen to these plants in the long term.<\/p>\n<p>That is why we will need to all think about a 120 year anti-nukiller campaigning strategy,<br \/>\nand we need to do it now.<\/p>\n<p>Though there are still a lot more nukiller \u2018accidents\u2019 waiting to happen.<\/p>\n<p>While we still have the continuing disasters at Chernobyl and Fukushima to resolve.<\/p>\n<p>There are very few people who are capable of doing any long term thinking,<br \/>\nnever mind thinking in to centuries to come,<br \/>\nyet that is just what we all need to start doing right now.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Problems Solved.
