{"id":6,"date":"2008-03-21T16:24:43","date_gmt":"2008-03-21T16:24:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rahu.dk\/martynlowe\/?p=6"},"modified":"2010-05-29T14:50:57","modified_gmt":"2010-05-29T14:50:57","slug":"6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.theproject.me.uk\/?p=6","title":{"rendered":"Cuba"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">Viewpoints in extremity.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">It is very difficult to think or write about any of the issues which face Cuba<br \/>\nwithout having to confront one major difficulty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">Namely, where ever you look to find information about Cuba, that this will<br \/>\nresult in your having to sort a lot of facts from political opinion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">The issues which face those who are concerned about Cuba tend to be clouded by<br \/>\nthe continuing United States Government embargo upon goods being sent or<br \/>\nservices being provided to the Island.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">This very fact means that at one extreme one finds many anti-Castro<br \/>\nanti-communist groups who are CIA backed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">On the other end of the political spectrum there is a range of groups who<br \/>\nwould end the embargo, or who would support the Cuban people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">Many of the people who support this political objective fear that they might<br \/>\nundermining their case by criticising the Cuban regime : they are either<br \/>\nunable or unwilling to do so.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">While many of these organisations might or might not be communist bodies, they<br \/>\nare all viewed to be that way by the many CIA backed right wing anti-communist<br \/>\nCubans who reside within the USA, &amp; the organisations to which they belong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">As a result of having to deal with those who would take up the above political<br \/>\npositions, it is very difficult for any of us who would end the US embargo,<br \/>\nbut are also critical of the Cuban government, to get any ideas about a<br \/>\ncritical support of the Cuban people across to the wider world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">That is why I think that it is now about time that the whole Cuban issue needs<br \/>\nto be looked at again. This is particularly important to do right now,<br \/>\nespecially in the light of recent speculation upon the health of Fidel<br \/>\nCastro.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">A little historical background information, starting with the story of William<br \/>\nWorthy.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">After four visits to Cuba, which started in 1961, journalist William Worthy<br \/>\nwas sent to jail for breaking the US embargo upon the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">The great singer Songwriter Phil Ochs wrote &#8216;The Ballad of William Worthy&#8217;<br \/>\nas a political commentary upon what happened to him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">The chorus to this work goes:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">&#8216;William Worthy isn&#8217;t worthy to enter our door<br \/>\nWent down to Cuba, he&#8217;s not American anymore<br \/>\nBut somehow it is strange to hear the State Department say<br \/>\nYou are living in the free world, in the free world you must stay.&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">The most telling line upon this song goes:<br \/>\n&#8216;The whole world is off limits, visit Disneyland this year.&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">You can pick up the full text to this work at:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.pdx.edu\/%7Etrent\/ochs\/lyrics\/ballad-of-william-worthy.html\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.cs.pdx.edu\/~trent\/ochs\/lyrics\/ballad-of-william-worthy.html<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">Since the fall of Batista dictatorship at the end of 1958 a US embargo upon<br \/>\nthe country has been in place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">Before the Batista Dictatorship came the dictatorship of General Menocal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">One must also remember that a US interest  goes back a long way. It occupied<br \/>\nthe country in 1899.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">Previous to that Cuba has been a colony of Spain in which Slavery  had<br \/>\nexisted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">Pastors for peace.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">Pastors for Peace has for years been defying the US embargo upon Cuba.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">You can read about their work upon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ifconews.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.ifconews.org\/<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">On 23-Jul-2003 PN carried this story:<br \/>\nPastors for Peace take 80 tons of aid for Cuba over US\/Mexico border in<br \/>\ndefiance of US embargo.<br \/>\nSee:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.peacenews.info\/news\/article\/166\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.peacenews.info\/news\/article\/166<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">On Friday, July 22nd, 2005 this was the headline upon the democracy-now<br \/>\nwebsite:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">&#8216;Pastors For Peace Caravan to Cuba Stopped at U.S.-Mexican Border&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">See:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.democracynow.org\/article.pl?sid=05\/07\/22\/143208\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.democracynow.org\/article.pl?sid=05\/07\/22\/143208<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">Amongst the books which were on this shipment was the classic Antoine De<br \/>\nSaint-Expupry story The Little Prince.<br \/>\nThis was a book which was penned while Antoine De Saint-Expupry was fleeing<br \/>\nfrom Nazi occupied France.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">Another of the works which was impounded by the US customs was one which had<br \/>\nbeen written by that well know right wing anti-communist bigot Winston<br \/>\nChurchill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">Library issues.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">There has also been a very long &amp; difficult debate which has taken place<br \/>\nwithin the Library world over the last decade or so. This has been a very<br \/>\ndestructive debate which centers on the so called independent libraries within<br \/>\nCuba, which are championed by the right wing FRIENDS OF CUBAN<br \/>\nLIBRARIES.<br \/>\nAn organization which is rumored to be financed by the CIA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">On the other hand we have the Cuban Libraries<br \/>\nSolidarity Group, which helps champion the development of libraries within<br \/>\nCuba.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">See:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cubanlibrariessolidaritygroup.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.cubanlibrariessolidaritygroup.org.uk\/<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">What even else the embargo has produced, there are two facts which can not be<br \/>\ndenied.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">Despite the embargo the Cubans have a well run Library system, and there is a<br \/>\nhigh literacy rate within the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">Cuban Anarchism &amp; the Making of myths.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">On of the most critical books about Cuba is by<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">Fernndez., Frank.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">Cuban Anarchism: The History of a Movement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">Translated and Introduction by Chaz Bufe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">See Sharp Press. Tuscan, Arizona.2002.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">ISBN  1 884365 19 1<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">Within this book Fernndez describes the long history of Cuban Anarchist<br \/>\nactivities, together with that of the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">The author points out that it was not the Communists who were principally<br \/>\nresponsible for the overthrow of the Batista dictatorship. It was the result<br \/>\nof years of Anarchist agitation, &amp; trade union activism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">His description of Castro would seem to liken the man to that of Jo Stalin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">The Castro regime introduced so called &#8216;Revolutionary Tribunals&#8217; (sic), and<br \/>\nRe-Introduced the Death penalty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">Many fine people were thrown into the jails, &amp; the &#8216;castro dictatopship&#8217;<br \/>\nre-wrote the history of the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">This is a book which everyone should read, as it gives a very different<br \/>\nhistory to that which most people have ever read about upon Cuba.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">For more information upon the book see the Publishers website:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.seesharppress.com\/cubananarchism.html\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.seesharppress.com\/cubananarchism.html<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">As an aside: &#8211; The myth of Che a revolutionary leader was also born at about<br \/>\nthe same time as Castro came to power.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">As a 2nd  aside: &#8211; One of the more crazy things which the Castro regimes did<br \/>\nwas cut down a lot of forests in order to plant more crops. This only resulted<br \/>\nin an ecological disaster, which must be having an effect upon weather patterns<br \/>\nwithin the region, &amp; so to upon the global greenhouse effect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">CO Issues.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">Perhaps the most damming criticisms of the Cuban government are to be found<br \/>\nwithin its constitution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">All its citizens are to be conscripted, &amp; there is no right to conscientious<br \/>\nobjection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">For more information upon this see the WRI report :<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">Refusing to Bear Arms: A worldwide survey of conscription and conscientious<br \/>\nobjection to military service.<br \/>\nCuba.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">At<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wri-irg.org\/co\/rtba\/cuba.htm\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.wri-irg.org\/co\/rtba\/cuba.htm<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">What  we can all do.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">We should all be in support of the Cuban library system, &amp; help to break the<br \/>\nUS embargo, by getting more books upon Anarcho-Pacifism on to their library<br \/>\nshelves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">We should campaign to introduce a legal right to conscientious objection<br \/>\nwithin the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">We should encourage any moves to help reforest the island.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">We should back the campaign to end the death penalty in Cuba.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Viewpoints in extremity.
