It is a powerful painting.  I kept the print<br \/>\nupon my wall for many a year.<\/p>\n<p>The first time I went to Oslo was in 1983, and at long last I<br \/>\nwas able to see the painting for myself.<\/p>\n<p>Something I never dreamed might happen to me while I was a child.<\/p>\n<p>Since then I&#8217;ve been to many other places which I never<br \/>\ndreamed about getting to while I was as child.<\/p>\n<p>Come to that: &#8211;<br \/>\nI&#8217;ve been to places, and seen things which my grandparents<br \/>\nwould never of been able to reach within their working lives.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Now I&#8217;ve reached the age of 58, and I&#8217;ll retire in just under<br \/>\nsix years and four months.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been doing a lot of thinking of late about what I want to<br \/>\ndo then.<\/p>\n<p>A lot of this thinking is that I want to go back &amp; revisit<br \/>\nvarious places again. This time I&#8217;ll be able to appreciate<br \/>\nthem with the benefit of experience, and a larger ( or wider )<br \/>\nknowledge base.<\/p>\n<p>What I really want to do is go off and do something new.<\/p>\n<p>The Trick about how to survive retirement is to keep the<br \/>\nfollowing in mind:<\/p>\n<p>One both needs to make ones own routines,<br \/>\nto be open to new ideas,<br \/>\nand be willing to take up any interesting opportunities<br \/>\nwhich present themselves to one.<\/p>\n<p>Of course we all have a lot of dreams.<\/p>\n<p>There always things to do which one has never done before.<\/p>\n<p>There are always places to visit which one has never been<br \/>\nto before.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve still to visit the following places:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; The Dickens museum<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Doctor Johnson&#8217;s House<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; The Foundling Hospital  Museum.<\/p>\n<p>&amp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; The Temple church in Middle Temple.<\/p>\n<p>I would also like to Spend an evening at a old fashioned<br \/>\nMusic Hall.<\/p>\n<p>Think and planning ahead for my retirement means that I&#8217;m<br \/>\nnow clearing away a lot of my long term projects.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve moved my political archive to the IISH in Amsterdam.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve rewritten my will.<\/p>\n<p>&amp;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m now reorganising my finances so that I&#8217;ll have enough to<br \/>\nlive on once I&#8217;m retired.<\/p>\n<p>The next thing I want to so is put a few things in place so<br \/>\nthat I may take up one projects.<\/p>\n<p>One thing I really want to do is more public speaking.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d also like to travel around Cornwall and Devon by bus,<br \/>\n&amp;<br \/>\nto teach myself Dutch.<\/p>\n<p>These are all achievable aims,<br \/>\n&amp;<br \/>\nnot unachievable dreams.<\/p>\n<p>They are also things which I can and should do before I<br \/>\nretire.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m looking forward to retirement, as I&#8217;ll be able to do all<br \/>\nof these things,<br \/>\n&amp;<br \/>\nMUCH MUCH MORE.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As a child I was given a small print of the Edvard Munch painting &#8216;The Sun&#8217;.
