{"id":76,"date":"2008-08-10T17:51:13","date_gmt":"2008-08-10T17:51:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rahu.dk\/martynlowe\/?p=76"},"modified":"2010-06-27T05:52:28","modified_gmt":"2010-06-27T05:52:28","slug":"in-to-the-dustbin-of-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.theproject.me.uk\/?p=76","title":{"rendered":"In to the Dustbin of History."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Chapel Street Market branch of Woolworths closed<br \/>\ndown last month, and thus another part of my landscape<br \/>\nhistory disappeared along side of it.<\/p>\n<p>I have a strong memory of being outside of the store while I<br \/>\nwas four years old &#8211; over 50 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Places change, buildings come and go.<\/p>\n<p>What used to be slum areas turn in to fashionable parts.<\/p>\n<p>Fashionable areas  decay and turn in to slum areas.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the old saying:<br \/>\n&#8216;What comes around goes around&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>What used to be the premises of C &amp; W May ( theatrical<br \/>\nCostumiers ) has changes a lot.<\/p>\n<p>I worked for the company in Covent Garden from 1968 to<br \/>\n1972.<\/p>\n<p>My how things have changed in the area since then!<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I would go to work while the Fruit and vegetable market<br \/>\nwas in full swing.<\/p>\n<p>In the evening I might sometimes have a beer in the Essex<br \/>\nSerpent &#8211; another one of the areas historical watering<br \/>\nholes.<\/p>\n<p>What was the C &amp; W May premises on King Street is now an<br \/>\nHMV record store.<\/p>\n<p>In the time I worked for Mays it moved to Garrick Street.<br \/>\nThose premises are now a Waterstones book shop.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday I went shopping in Covent Garden,<br \/>\nand punched a couple of DVDs in the King Street store.<\/p>\n<p>Both the King Street &amp; Garrick Street premises have a very<br \/>\ndifferent layout to what they had while I worked in them.<\/p>\n<p>While visiting these stores I use my memory map to work out<br \/>\non just what spot I&#8217;m standing upon in terms of the old Mays<br \/>\npremises.<\/p>\n<p>It can be very strange and very disconcerting to be at the<br \/>\nsame place which is not the same place as one remembers.<\/p>\n<p>Part of my own radical walking tour covers this part of<br \/>\nCovent Garden.<\/p>\n<p>I can point out the former headquarters of the CPGB<br \/>\n( communist part of Great Britain) on the corner of King<br \/>\nStreet, and which is now a bank.<\/p>\n<p>or<\/p>\n<p>Where I once saw the great Actress Sybil Thorndyke  being<br \/>\ntaken in to a restaurant along King Street.<\/p>\n<p>or<\/p>\n<p>The former offices of the Left Book Club in Henrietta<br \/>\nStreet.<\/p>\n<p>&amp;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll even show you where I used to work.<\/p>\n<p>Just come with me for a stroll around Covent Garden<br \/>\nsometime:<br \/>\nAlong with my historical memories of the area.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Chapel Street Market branch of Woolworths closed down last month, and thus another part of my landscape history disappeared along side of it.
