Simon Dee ( Carl Henty-Dodd ) was the first pirate radio
\ndisc jockey upon radio Caroline.<\/p>\n
Radio Caroline being one of the various off-shore radio
\nstations which broadcast pop music to Britain during the
\nperiod 1964 to 1967.<\/p>\n
Before working for Radio Caroline he had done a string of
\njobs. At one time been vacuum cleaner salesman, and had
\nrun a coffee bar.<\/p>\n
After his days on Radio Caroline he worked for Radio
\nLuxembourg, and then hosting some kind of television show .<\/p>\n
His meteoric rise towards,
\nand fall from stardom,
\nshould be a lesson to us all.<\/p>\n
I meet Simon Dee during the summer of 1974 when he just
\nturned up at a meeting of Greenpeace ( London ).<\/p>\n
During that period the focus of the group was French
\natmospheric nukiller bomb tests at Mururoa Atoll in the
\npacific.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
We used to organise regular 2-5 person pickets of the
\nFrench Embassy during the evening rush hours.<\/p>\n
We also protested about both the Indian & Chinese nukiller
\nbombs.<\/p>\n
The main contribution of Simon Dee to the meeting was to
\ntell us that we should spend more money upon the work we
\nwere doing.<\/p>\n
He could get us the sum of \u00a310,000 to help us in our
\ncampaigning work, but first of all we should tell him how it
\nwould be spent.<\/p>\n
All he had to do was phone up a friend of his and ask for the
\nmoney.<\/p>\n
After half an hour of this he then turned around to ask if
\nwe could give him 10 pence for the phone.<\/p>\n
I never meet him again,
\nexcept to see him walking down a Twickenham street.<\/p>\n
