{"id":79,"date":"2008-08-23T05:58:12","date_gmt":"2008-08-23T05:58:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rahu.dk\/martynlowe\/?p=79"},"modified":"2011-03-28T17:11:53","modified_gmt":"2011-03-28T17:11:53","slug":"james-duff-brown-1862-1914","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.theproject.me.uk\/?p=79","title":{"rendered":"James Duff Brown (1862-1914)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Very few people might ever of heard of James Duff Brown ,<br \/>\nbut his impact upon just how we use public libraries is<br \/>\nenormous.<\/p>\n<p>Brown worked as a librarian in Camberwell before he<br \/>\nbecame the first Borough librarian for Islington.<\/p>\n<p>His great innovation was to introduce &#8216;open access&#8217; within<br \/>\npublic libraries.<\/p>\n<p>Previous to that &#8216;closed access&#8217; meant that one had to<br \/>\nbrowse the library catalogue, and complete a form in order<br \/>\nfor one of the library staff to fetch the book out from the<br \/>\nback.<\/p>\n<p>Brown wrote upon various aspects of librarianship.<\/p>\n<p>His Publications include:<\/p>\n<p>A manual of practical bibliography.<\/p>\n<p>Subject Classification.<\/p>\n<p>&amp;<\/p>\n<p>British Musical Biography: A Dictionary of Musical Artists,<br \/>\nAuthors, and Composers Born in Britain and Its Colonies.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone who is interested in library history or library<br \/>\ncataloguing should find out more about his work.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Very few people might ever of heard of James Duff Brown , but his impact upon just how we use public libraries is enormous.
