{"id":86,"date":"2008-10-18T07:29:47","date_gmt":"2008-10-18T07:29:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rahu.dk\/martynlowe\/?p=86"},"modified":"2008-10-24T05:57:07","modified_gmt":"2008-10-24T05:57:07","slug":"death-pays-a-dividend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.theproject.me.uk\/?p=86","title":{"rendered":"Death pays a Dividend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is not a normal publishing practice to review a book some 60<br \/>\nyears after it came out, but in this one case these are very good<br \/>\nreasons to do so.<\/p>\n<p>Death pays a Dividend is an account of the arms trade, &amp; the<br \/>\nvarious companies which still are involved in the trade.<\/p>\n<p>Companies which are still very well know by any of todays<br \/>\nanti arms trade campaigners.<\/p>\n<p>Companies like:<br \/>\nVickers.<br \/>\nDupont.<br \/>\n&amp;<br \/>\nICI.<\/p>\n<p>Starting with the US, German, &amp; British companies which<br \/>\nsupplied all these countries armies during World War one, the<br \/>\nbook goes on to show that even while in the middle of this<br \/>\nconflict, that an International arms cartel was in<br \/>\noperation.<\/p>\n<p>It was British made shells which fell upon British Troops in<br \/>\nGallipoli, While after the armistice Vickers had to pay for the<br \/>\nKrupp-patented rights on the 123,000,000 fuses which were<br \/>\nused against the German armies.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>British manufactuers also supplied the Nazi dictatorship.<\/p>\n<p>While raw Materials from the USA, the French, British, &amp;<br \/>\nDutch Empires, were sold on in order to built up the Imperial<br \/>\nJapanese War effort.<\/p>\n<p>Of course this sad story did not end there, as these same arms<br \/>\ntraders actively succeed in blocking the various arms trade<br \/>\nnegotiations which were undertaken during the 1930s.<\/p>\n<p>Even that great figure of appeasement Neville Chamberlain<br \/>\nheld shares in ICI, who?s subsidiary company ICI (Metals) Ltd<br \/>\n?manufactured most of the munitions for Japan during 1932.?<br \/>\nThus with facts such as the ones mentioned above, and a lot of<br \/>\nother similar ones, its importance as an activist reference<br \/>\nwork can not be understated.<\/p>\n<p>One might not be able to pick up this work in hurry, but there<br \/>\nare still a lot of old copies to be found,<br \/>\n&amp;<br \/>\nif it?s not to be found,<br \/>\nThen order it up from your local Public Library.<\/p>\n<p>Brockway, Fenner<br \/>\n&amp;<br \/>\nMullally, Frederick<\/p>\n<p>Death Pays a Dividend<\/p>\n<p>Left Book Club.<br \/>\n( Victor Gollancz Ltd )<\/p>\n<p>London<\/p>\n<p>1944<\/p>\n<p>158 pp<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It is not a normal publishing practice to review a book some 60 years after it came out, but in this one case these are very good reasons to do so.
